<title>Panteley Yakovetz [&nbsp; - 02/20/2012] </title>

<description><![CDATA[<img src="/components/comObituaries/obituarythumbnails/164_115559.jpg" alt="Panteley Yakovetz" />Panteley “Pete” “Lefty” Yakovetz, 79, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 10:31 a.m., Monday, February 20, 2012 in IU Health La Porte Hospital.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the arrangements.

He was born June 1, 1932 in Swoyersville, PA to Panteley and Anna (Sulich) Yakovetz.

Mr. Yakovetz graduated from Portage High School in 1950, where he was the pitcher for their baseball team. Pete served in the US Army as a Sargent during Korea. He worked for the Gary Park Department and as a manager for Western Cold Drawn Steel for 8 years. “Lefty” played “B” Team baseball for the St. Louis Browns in Vincennes, IN. Pete was a member of the American Legion and a former member of Faith Baptist Church, La Porte. He was an avid woodworker, loved archery and earned his brown belt in Karate.

On October 29, 1952 in Gary, IN he married M. “Bernie” Ligda, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Patricia (Don) Smith of Hobart and Stephanie (Glenn) Hammond of Portage; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Tillie Mezyllo of Arizona. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael A. Yakovetz; one brother, William Yakovetz and one sister, Mary Dodd.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Road, La Porte (219) 362-3100 with Rev. Jack M. Cox officiating. Full military honors will be conducted following the services. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until time of service, Thursday at the funeral home. Cremation will take place.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2012 at First Apostolic Church, 1930 Boyd Boulevard, La Porte, with Rev. Richard Hoffman officiating. Cremation will take place. He was born February 12, 1955 in Michigan City, IN to William J. and Daisy M. (Holtz) Helmken.

Mr. Helmken worked for Data Link in South Bend for 15 years and most recently as a correctional officer at Westville. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, Michigan City; member and past master of Acme Lodge #83, F &amp; A.M.; director, actor, producer and past president of Footlight Players in Michigan City. Edward was a past leader with Boy Scout Troop #878 and worked at the Michigan City YMCA as a referee for basketball games and gave guitar lessons. He also volunteered at Franciscan Alliance-St. Anthony Health and bowled in various bowling leagues.

On October 16, 1982 in La Porte, IN, he married Ellen L. Jahns who survives.

Also surviving are two children, Lisa (Jacob) Hill of Charleston, SC and Eric Helmken of Trail Creek; one grandson, Gavin Jacob Hill; one brother, Stephen (Alice) Helmken of La Porte; one aunt, Joan Smith of North Canton, OH; numerous nieces and nephews; and longtime family friend, Linda Weber of Michigan City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Lakeview Funeral Home, 247 W. Johnson Road, La Porte (219) 362-3100 with Pastor Larry Cameron officiating. A visitation and viewing will be held from 3-7 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2012 and from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2012 at the funeral home. Cremation will take place following services.

She was born February 6, 1934 in Atlanta, GA to Charles Edward and Maggie (Bennet) Sirmans, Sr. 

Willie worked as secretary to the vice president in the K-Mart Corporate Office Customer Service Department for 18 years until her retirement in 1994. She was a member of Victorious Women and was an avid bowler.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Lankford of Macon, GA and Donna (Corbitt) Lewis of Westville; five grandchildren, Christopher Weldon, Michael Lankford, Victoria Lewis, Jacob Lewis and Julia Lewis; one sister, Barbara Jean (Joe) Aldridge of Atlanta, GA.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Sirmans, Jr.; and two sisters, Alice Sorrels and Jackie Gilbert.

A celebration service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Liberty Bible Church, 824 N. Calumet Avenue, Chesterton, IN, 46304 with Pastor Cort Bucher officiating. Mrs. Vance was a homemaker who enjoyed being outside, gardening, flowers and most importantly spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Kubit and Danny Kubit, both of La Porte; three grandchildren, Mitchell Kubit of Detroit, MI, Linda (John) Goodman of La Porte and Kristen Kubit of Michigan City; her companion, Charles Schoff of La Porte; one sister, Bernice Seeberger of Casa Grande, AZ and one sister-in-law, Diane Bulanda of Lowell, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

He was born January 30, 1940 in Lenox, TN to George Edward and Mary Myrtle (Kolwyck) Childress.

Mr. Childress worked 35 years for Ford Motor Company until his retirement in January, 2003. Jerry was an avid sports fan and his favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys.

On May 11, 1962 in New Chicago, IN, he married Sherry Cork who survives.

Also surviving are three children, George (Vicki) Childress, Jr. of La Porte, Bill (Vernie) Childress of La Porte and Mary Ann Childress of Fayetteville, AR; four grandchildren, Kristina (Rob) Childress McClure of Katy, TX, Matthew and Heather Robbins of La Porte and Stephen Childress of Portage; three step-grandchildren, James Smith of Portage, Nathan (Danielle) Strefling of Walkerton and Jake (Lacey) Strefling of Punta Gorda, FL; two step-great-grandchildren, Savanna and Lane Strefling; two sisters, Ann (Bob) Parchman of Ripley, TN and Joan (Joe) May of Hammond; one brother, Michael Childress of La Porte; one brother-in-law, Bill Stafford of Lake Station and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Virginia “Faye” Stafford; two brothers, James Edward “Demo” Childress and Gene Bennet Childress.

He was born December 5, 1938 in Lynch, KY to Mel and Eleanor (Boggs) Cooper.

Mr. Cooper worked building and repairing electronic equipment. He also worked at Kingsley Furniture and R &amp; R Tool and Die until his retirement in 2001. Bill was a member of the United Steel Workers Union, enjoyed C.B. radio and spending time with his grandchildren.

On November 5, 1959 in Jonesville, Virginia, he married Joan Brown who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Kathy (Robert) Perschke, Larry (Nancy) Cooper, both of Michigan City and Gary Cooper of La Porte; three grandchildren, Tara (Andrew) Morse, Erik (Leslie) Perschke and Brittany Cooper; six great-grandchildren, Emma, Blake, Alex, Abby, Leah and Grace.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Lakeview Funeral Home, 247 W. Johnson Road, La Porte (219) 362-3100 with Pastor Ernie Milton officiating. A visitation and viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in Swan Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.
