Janis M. Jones, 84, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 19, 2012 at South Shore Health & Rehabilitation, Gary, IN.
She was born April 7, 1928 in La Porte, IN to John Grandorf and Wilma (Cissne) Flynn.
Janis was the co-owner of Mickey’s Bar in La Porte which was purchased in 1982. She had also been employed at Plimpton Press and Whirlpool Corp. in La Porte. Janis was a member of First United Methodist Church of La Porte. She enjoyed cross stitching, needle point, and collecting Hummel figurines. She was a longtime member of Epson Sigma Alpha Sorority and volunteered at La Porte Hospital.
On September 12, 1947 in La Porte, she married the love of her life, Robert E. Jones, who survives.
Also surviving are five children, Garry R. (Sandra) Jones of Ft. Mill, South Carolina, Michael L. (Rondi) Jones of La Porte, Mark A. (Cathy) Jones of Burlington, North Carolina, Cynthia A. (Richard) Bechinski of Michigan City, and Jeffery L. (Diane) Jones of South Bend; one sister, Doris Henderson of Stevensville, MI; fifteen grandchildren, Brian, Jamie, Gail, Chris, Amanda, Brandon, Nick, Tony, Kristy, Christopher, Nathan, Lisa, Stacie, Grant and Britne; twenty-five great grandchildren; and two extended family members, Connie Dennis and Mary Gigliotti.
Preceding her in death were her parents; step father, Verl Flynn; two sister’s, Jean Warner and Betty Grace Grandorf; and brother, John Grandorf, Jr.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100, with Pastor Evan Lash officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 26, 2012 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery immediately following services.
