Obituary for Eugene Alexander Dollberg

Eugene Alexander Dollberg, 78, of LaPorte passed away peacefully at home at 10:25 AM Tuesday, September 8, 2020, after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born on June 27, 1942 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark, New Jersey to Alexander and Alma (Jabs) Dollberg.

Gene grew up in Cedar Grove, New Jersey and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1960. He was an excellent athlete and especially enjoyed softball, bowling and golf. After high school, he worked for several companies in the greater Newark area before moving to Indiana to start his family after marrying Carol Lynn Kodweis on January 27, 1968 in Rochester, NY. He later earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Organization Management from Calumet College in May of 1989.

Gene worked at Bethlehem Steel until he retired in January of 2001 after a 33-year career as an engineer at the Burns Harbor, Indiana plant. In addition to being a great family man and father, Gene was well known in LaPorte for his kindness. He could always be depended upon to help his family, friends and neighbors. Gene volunteered countless hours in the community serving as a Little League Coach, a volunteer at Beechwood Golf Course and was Past President of the City of La Porte Redevelopment Commission.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Carol.

He is survived by his two brothers, Dr. Allen (Susan) Dollberg of Novato, California and John (Suzanne) Dollberg of Cocoa Beach, Florida; two children, Ehren (Kristine) Dollberg of Newaygo, Michigan and Jennifer Dollberg of Rensselaer, NY; and two granddaughters, Addison and Avery Dollberg.

Per Eugene’s request no services will be held. Cremation will take place. Inurnment will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte. Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Road, LaPorte (219) 362-3100 is caring for the arrangements.
