Obituary for Marvin Kominiarek, Jr.

Marvin Kominiarek, Jr., 81, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 11:27 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Life Care Center of Michigan City.

He was born August 29, 1937, in Michigan City, IN, to Marvin and Sofia (Pytnia) Kominiarek, Sr.

Marvin was a graduate of Elston High School and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Notre Dame University with degrees in finance and accounting. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he returned to Michigan City where he took over his father’s business, Kominiarek Insurance Agency, which he operated for nearly forty years. However, his favorite occupation was income tax preparation, a service he provided for 58 years right up to his death. Marvin was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church, La Porte and was very active in the community in various organizations holding many positions. He was a true renaissance man, with many interests and hobbies ranging from piano playing to model railroading, art to sports. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, but enjoyed watching all sports, often several at the same time! He was extremely well-read and was often called a walking encyclopedia for he retained a vast amount of knowledge. He leaves his family with happy memories of learning and playing Gin Rummy, Mille Bornes, Monopoly and other board games. No one is sure if he was a good loser, because he rarely lost. Marvin was a very kind and extremely generous man. He always referred to his wallet as the “Bank of Marvin” and would help anyone in need. As a father and grandfather, he was always ready with some “gas money” whenever anyone came for a visit. His generosity, kind heart, and quiet sense of humor will be a treasured memory for all of us.

On July 5, 1991, he married Mary (Goodall Nilson) Kominiarek, who survives.

Also surviving are four children, Marvin Kominiarek, III of Boca Raton, FL, Martina (Jacques Peterman) Kominiarek of Cooperstown, PA, Laura (Martin Strasser) Kay of Boynton Beach, FL and Kristin Hays of Danville, IN; five stepchildren, Ted (Angie) Nilson of Michigan City, Kirsten (Wes Ashmore) Nilson of Batavia, IL, Kara (David) Potter of Chesterton, IN, Ian (Danielle) Nilson of Mokena, IL and Emily (Christopher) Baxley of Fayetteville, NC; fifteen grandchildren, William, Cordelia, and Sherman Eddy, Karoline Strasser, Abigail Hays and Jon Hays, Jr., Megan Nilson, Danielle Hyde, Paige Nilson, Katie Potter, Haydin Rivera, Maecy Ashmore, Cecilia and Andrew Nilson and Noah Baxley; one great grandchild joining the world in April; one sister, Constance Yore of St. Joseph, MI; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding in death were his parents; one daughter, Cynthia Strasser, one son-in-law, John Hays, Sr.; one granddaughter, Riley Nilson; one great grandson, Steven Eddy; one sister, Rita Martin; and mother of his children, Mary Jane Kully.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 1101 Michigan Avenue, La Porte with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 -7 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2019 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100 and from 10 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the church. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2019 at the funeral home.
