Obituary for Richard A. Snyder

Richard A. Snyder, 68, of Portage, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 7, 2020 in his home.

He was born July 3, 1951, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Ralph and Bessie Leigh (Nicholson) Snyder.

Richard was a retiree from the Steel Workers Union, working for Bethlehem Steel, International Steel Group and last at Arcelor Mittal. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Portage. Richard formerly enjoyed golfing. He also enjoyed computers and spending time with his close-knit family.

On January 3, 1991, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Chesterton, Indiana, he married, Karen Kay (Braun) Snyder, who survives.

Also surviving are his three children, Robert (Lynda) Cram of Portage, Edward Snyder of Portage and Rachel Snyder of Murray, Kentucky; mother-in-law, Marianne Braun of Valparaiso; three siblings, Ralph Edward Snyder of Valparaiso, Betty Jean Snyder of Minnesota and Barbara Snyder of North Carolina; two brothers-in-law, Karl (Melissa) Braun and Kenneth (Julia) Braun both of Valparaiso; and two grandchildren, Emily Hope Snyder, age 12 and Edward Adrian Snyder, age 10.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 12 Noon, Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at Graceland Cemetery Chapel, 1505 E. Morthland Ave., Valparaiso with Pastor Ben Ahlersmeyer officiating. Visitation and viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service at the cemetery chapel. Sunset Funeral Home is caring for the arrangements.
