Obituary for Vivian Martha Hardister

Vivian M. Hardister, Talented Local Matriarch, Dies at 84

A few days before her 85th Birthday, Vivian Martha Hardister, of La Porte, Indiana, a devout Christian, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at 3:26 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020 to be with her Lord and Savior.

She was born in July of 1935, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, the second of three children, to Raymond and Madeleine (Rebouch) Miollis, recent French immigrants. Vivian grew up in Maywood, Illinois, and attended Trinity High School.

Vivian earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and French at Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois. She set sail for Europe to complete her final year of college, studying in Switzerland, visiting relations and family landmarks across France, and sightseeing during her breaks. She married R. E. Patrick Timme in 1958 and with bore six girls in Chicago. After her divorce, she became a social worker for Catholic Family services, assisting war-torn Vietnamese families with resettlement in the Michigan City area, all the while being a valiant single parent in the tumultuous 70s, in Long Beach, Indiana. In 1977, she moved westward to Longview, Washington, to be near her two brothers. On September 17. 1983, Vivian married Dave Hardister and later moved to Napa, California, where she began her study of gemstones and fine jewelry. When Vivian returned to her beloved Lake Michigan in the 90s, she brought her vision to life at Vivian’s, a jewelry store in New Buffalo, Michigan. For eleven years, she delighted many a shopper with her finely curated offerings. Among her many talents were design, fashion, and cooking. Vivian was a talented seamstress who made many charming creations for her home, herself, her children - and their many dolls - over the years. She was once featured on the cover of the Home section in the Sunday Chicago Tribune for her ingenious Rec Room transformation in a nautical style. She was also an exceptional chef, mastering French cooking techniques in her early years, honing her skills across the decades with new delicacies, often grown in her garden, for family and friends. Vivian was an intelligent, creative, and selfless person who was kind, cheerful, and loved her family unconditionally.

Vivian is survived by her husband, David Paul Hardister of La Porte; six children, Anne Ruth (Daniel) Hanford of Red Bluff, California, Mary Katherine (David Christman) Timme of Los Angeles, California, Elizabeth Anne (Alexis) Caswell of Wheaton, Illinois, Patricia Annette (Eduardo Valdez) Baldwin and Julia Lynn (Tom) Philbrook both of Longview, Washington and Alison Marie (Zach) Anderson of Nevada County, California; three step-children, Penny Hardister of Las Angeles, CA, David Hardister and Patsy Westland both of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers, Daniel and Phillip (Kitty Sennett) Miollis both of Longview, Washington; nephew, Stephen Miollis; nieces, Suzanne, Diane, and Andrea Miollis; fourteen grandchildren, Danielle, Bethany, Bernard, Alex, Anna, Andrew, Daniel, Matthew, Jonathan, Sarah, Alison, Alec, Evan, and Rachel; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was a beloved matriarch who will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and neighbors.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and one niece, Michelle Miollis.
